United States soccer fans have been clamoring to see young midfielder Diego Luna get an extended shot with the national team. He delivered in his second start for the Americans – even after taking a shot of his own.
The Real Salt Lake star, who appeared to sustain a broken nose after taking an elbow to the face just moments before, threaded an unbelievable through ball past two defenders to connect with striker Brian White for a precise finish to put the USMNT up 1-0 over Costa Rica in the 21st minute Wednesday night.

Luna, looking to improve his chances of getting future opportunities with the USMNT, had a gutsy first half performance to showcase for coach Mauricio Pochettino. Some have questioned whether Luna's game, a traditional No. 10, can translate to the international level, but he was as advertised against Costa Rica.
His ability to see the play develop before it happens and instinctively use his technical skill to beat defenses is what made him the 2024 MLS Young Player of the Year last season.
