Reports suggest Amorim is considering calling up Bayindir to the first team as a result. United's manager did publicly back his number one after Thursday's game, but a switch could be made to keep Onana out of the firing line.

Legendary United keeper Peter Schmeichel was highly critical of Onana. He said: "There are so many issues that Ruben Amorim needs to sort out.

“I would be very uncomfortable pointing to one player but it’s not great to watch. You never feel safe. You never feel like going 2-1 up … you always fear the other team are going to come back.”

Sir Alex Ferguson's longtime assistant Mike Phelan suggested it might be time to move on, telling the Telegraph: “That’s the biggest decision as a manager you have to make. Is there a No 2 goalkeeper at United capable of taking the No 1 role for the rest of the season? You can’t keep covering up those mistakes.”
